iPad Pro 12.9 Case Compatible with Smart Keyboard - Behind the Design

Since 2010 MacCase has had an industry leading, leather folio style case to protect and transport Apple's iPad tablet computer. While thousands of cases have been sold over the last 8 years, one thing that haunted the MacCase design team was the fact that there has never been an iPad folio, or iPad Pro 12.9 case compatible with the smart keyboard.

Until now.

For the keyboard compatible iPad Pro case, the team had to dig deep and pull one out of the hat to solve the problem that had plagued them for many years: How to hold the iPad in the folio while still allowing the keyboard to integrate into the case design?

In the latest in a series of interviews about the story behind the design of MacCase products, we are speaking to MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the company's long awaited iPad Pro case that works with the Smart Keyboard (sold separately).

JKD: I know you've been waiting for a long time to tell this story. Let's begin at the beginning. Where and when did the idea for this kind of iPad keyboard case start?

MS: Like a lot of our new products, the impetus came from a combination of customers asking for a folio that works with the keyboard and me seeing a need in the market. This one was really hard though.

An iPad Pro Case For the Smart Keyboard

JKD: Why is that? What made it so difficult?

MS: If the Apple Keyboard could be attached to our iPad Folio I would have done it 6 or 8 years ago, (laughing). As mentioned, customers have been asking for keyboard compatible cases for a long time. Several design and engineering elements have prevented our Folio designs from incorporating compatibility with Apple's keyboard.

The problem was a retrofit solution was not going to work. A clean sheet of paper design is what was needed. The whole idea of an iPad case compatible with smart keyboard and how it should work with said keyboard needed to be rethought.

JKD: Did you see what else was out there?

Ms: Only what people have shown me, customers and such. I maybe spent a hour during the whole process seeing what was out there. I can process that kind of stuff very quickly then check all the boxes of the things we're not going to do.

I wanted an original solution that would be superior to what was out there.

Several bag companies make keyboard compatible folios and while some are nice, many are awful. All have flaws that impair their functionality or aesthetics which are important to MacCase customers.

Some use very poor materials which last a few weeks then break and need to be thrown away. Some are poorly engineered while others don't really protect the Apple tablets they are supposedly designed to protect. For this program, MacCase has set out to build the best leather iPad case compatible with smart keyboard, period.

It's much easier to check on what everyone else is doing, copy the best ideas and put that out. That's how most cart companies design their cars. I would know. Every once in a while, someone checks on what everyone else is doing and does something original anyway. This is what MacCase does almost every time (laughing).

Testing the Smart Keyboard iPad Pro Case

JKD: Did you have a clear idea going in of what you wanted the design to be?

MS: Yes. Well I know what I didn't want and I knew it had be to something special. I knew if I solved all the inherent problems that I saw and did it in the MacCase way regarding build quality, materials, etc, we'd have something special.

Any MacCase Premium Leather model is going to feature the brand's signature "design DNA". This consists of a timeless, yet modern aesthetic, bullet proof build quality and superior materials and functionality.

Work began in earnest on 2 keyboard compatible iPad Pro cases last November when the design staff was tasked with finally finding a solution for the keyboard compatibility issue. Initially, all the problems with such a potential design were identified.

Then a "best in class" list was created to make sure whatever the solutions that were created for the 10.5 and 12.9, they were going follow in the MacCase tradition of innovation and product excellence.

After a almost a year of trial and error, testing and retesting, we finished an iPad Pro case that works with the smart keyboard. Finally.

JKD: So what was the breakthrough? Was there a "Eureka" moment?

MS: The breakthrough came in how our iPad portfolio case holds the tablet in place. This has allowed the dream of integrating the Apple keyboard into the design to become a reality. This breakthrough will allow MacCase to create what I hope customers will call the "best iPad Pro keyboard case" available from anyone at any price.

Building the Best iPad Case Compatible with Smart Keyboard

JKD: And the answer was.....?

MS: The answer came in the form of a very special elasto-polymer material that allows the iPad to be securely held in place while still allowing access for keyboard integration.

The material doesn't use any glue or other temporary method to hold the tablet secure. There's nothing to wear out or break. It also allows the customer to easily remove their iPad from the folio if they desire.

Moreover, the new material is excellent for absorbing shock, protecting the vulnerable edges and corners of the Apple tablet while not obstructing the screen in any way. This is extremely important and a big leap forward over our current Folio designs.

Once there was a way to hol the 10.5 or 12.9 securely in their respective cases and integrate the Apple Keyboard, development accelerated. The features and details of the "Best in Class" list could now be implemented.

A Pencil Holder and Keyboard

JKD: So you didn't bring them to production now that this major hurdle as overcome?

MS: You would think after solving the initial "impossible" task of how to integrate the iPad into the case with the keyboard we would have stopped, took a breathe and brought the folio to market. Nope.

The innovation was just getting started.

Since the introduction of the Pro models and more specifically, the Apple Pencil, MacCase Premium Leather Folios have had industry leading protection for the Apple Pencil integrated into front cover of every design.

Many other manufacturers just added an elastic loop to an edge of their folios and called it a day. You put your $100 Apple Pencil into the loop, pick up the case, the Pencil falls out, lost forever and you're out $100.

While the original solution of an integrated, front cover Pencil pocket works great for a non-keyboard folio, there is big problem for an iPad Pro case compatible with the smart keyboard that has a pocket sewn into the front cover.

JKD: What's the problem?

MS: The product will not lay flat on a table top when unfolded. If a pocket for the pencil is sewn to the front cover and that same cover is the surface you are using as a base for your typing, you have a real problem. No one wants to type on a non-level surface.

This presented another "make or break" design challenge for us. The keyboard folio had to allow the user to type on a flat surface.

Several additional places to store the Apple Pencil were tried but none as successful as the front cover. But again, the storage of the Apple Pencil in this location would not work with an iPad Pro cover compatible with Smart Keyboard. Unless the Pencil pocket could be removed when the user needed to open the folio and type.

12.9-inch Case Compatible with Smart Keyboard with Pencil Holder

JKD: The Pencil holder was not the only value added feature on your list though was it? What else did you want to incorporate into the design?

MS: For many years customers have been asking for features to be added to the MacCase Premium Leather iPad Folios. These features range from a slot to hold business cards to a place to store a microwave oven so they can heat up their lunch.

The problem here is how do you add features without increasing the overall bulk? In addition, how can you add features and the associated costs that some people might want and are willing to pay for but not penalize the customers that don't?

JKD: And you came up with...?

MS: Along with an innovative way to hold the iPads in the folio, the new keyboard compatible iPad Pro cases feature 4 accessory options that will greatly expand the functionality of the design. The 4 were chosen based on the feedback received over the years from MacCase Folio customers.

They are a Pencil Holder or Pencil Case, a Cable Pouch, a Business Card Holder and a Document Holder.

The best part is that if you don't want them, you don't have to pay for them. If a base folio is all you need, there will be no penalty. With these designs, you will be able to add the features and options you want and not get stuck (or have to pay for) options you don't. You'll have the freedom to fully customize your folio to meet your needs and the freedom not to.

How to Choose the Best iPad Pro Case Compatible with Apple Keyboard

While demands may vary, the features and design details covered in this piece can be applied to a broad range of user situations. In summary, look for:

• Seamless integration between the case and the Smart Keyboard
• A design that sits flat and will not wobble due to the design
• A design that is quick and easy to set up
• A protective design offering corner protection and padding
• A folio made from quality materials worthy of the world's most expensive tablet
• A secure place for the Apple Pencil and other options

With the plethora of iPad cases compatible with the Smart Keyboard, how does one choose the best one for their specific needs? If you've looked around you know the options run the gamut from utter junk designed to fall part before you have it out of the box to beautifully crafted, brilliantly engineered pieces of design.

We've gathered some of the best and worst cases to create a list of "must have" features. Anyone looking for an iPad Pro case compatible with Smart Keyboard will want to make sure the folio they choose has most, if not all of these features. A single design that contains them all could be called "the best".

Whether you have a 12.9 or 10.5, the features to look for are the same. Let's take a look at some of the best features to look for.

Your Smart Keyboard Lives in the iPad Case

If you are buying an iPad Pro keyboard case, the first thing to look for is that the keyboard can remain attached to your tablet when inside the folio when the design is closed and not in use. Having to remove Apple'Keyboard every time you close the case or install it every time you open it is a colossal design flaw.

It would be hard to call an iPad case "smart keyboard compatible" if it functions this way. Yes you can use your tablet with the keyboard after installing and uninstalling it each time, but would you really want to?

The Smart Keyboard compatible iPad Pro case you choose should allow the keyboard to seamlessly integrate into the design. The best designs will merge the keyboard and it's front cover into the front and rear panels of the folio cover in such a way that you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. In the word's of Forest Gump, they should fit together like, "peas and carrots".

How seamlessly the exterior cover integrates with the keyboard will tell you a lot about all the other aspects of the case's design. If this is done in an intelligent and artful way, look for other outstanding design and engineering details throughout the cover. If it's done poorly, keep looking.

Your iPad Pro Case Compatible with Smart Keyboard Should Sit Flat

Nothing is more annoying than trying to type on a surface that is not level to the user or is wobbling upon each key strike. It's a lot a like trying to have a nice dinner at a table with one leg not sitting squarely on the floor.

We've all had that experience of the wobbly table. The wobbly typing surface might be worse. Especially if you have a deadline you are trying to meet. Your folio should enhance your experience and make your work and life easier, not add to your already stressful situation due to poor design.

Look for a Smart Keyboard compatible iPad case that features a front face that is as smooth as possible. The front cover should be free of protrusions, elastic bands, pencil loops or any other parts of the design that will prevent the typing surface from sitting cleanly and completely flat on a surface.

This is the kind of detail that someone might overlook especially if purchasing online. Once you receive the folio and start using it, you find that various accouterments that you thought were features are actually poorly designed details getting in the way of the very thing you bought the cover to do: Help you work better, more efficiently and more comfortably.

When shopping online or even in a brick and mortar store, make sure that when the folio is set up to type, the typing surface is completely flat and wobble free. You'll be glad you did.

The Best iPad Pro Case Compatible with Smart Keyboard Will Be Easy to Set Up

What good is spending the extra money on a 12.9 or 10.5 case that is smart keyboard compatible if you have to schedule time in your calendar each and every time you want to set it up?

The best keyboard compatible iPad cases will set up and be ready to use in under a second. Really. You should be able to put the folio on your work surface, open it and be ready to start typing immediately.

A cover designed for professional use should have been designed by professionals. A professionally designed folio cover will have this set up process designed to be as quick and easy as possible.

When you open the product, the keyboard should "stick" to the front cover and open with it. The auto on/off feature built into the keyboard will turn your Apple tablet on as the folio is opened. If you open the case and the cover does not stay attached to allow the keyboard to turn your Apple tablet on, keep looking.

Again, the relationship between the cover you're looking at and the Apple cover should be one of seamless integration.

The Best Keyboard Case Will Be Protective

The number one job of any case for any electronic device should be protection. There is not much value in an iPad case that works with the Smart Keyboard that cannot protect your 10.5 or 12.9 in the first place.

How will I know if the cover I am looking at purchasing is protective?

Great question. One major concern to any iPad owner is corner protection. How protected are the corners? Are they exposed? Too much protection becomes a compromise for daily use (how much weight and thickness are you willing to add to the cover before it becomes a hassle to use).

The best keyboard compatible iPad Pro case will offer corner protection using the latest lightweight, shock absorbing materials. If corner protection is important to you, look for folio that offer this as a feature.

Secondly, there is nothing like good old fashioned padding to help absorb impacts, shocks and abrasions. With padding, a little goes a long way. Especially when layered under a material like leather which has some shock absorption as part of it's inherent natural structure.

The layering of materials, (exterior, foam and interior lining) allows the folio to "give" a little bit when you touch it like the steering wheel in a luxury car. Not only does this feel wonderful every time you interact with the cover, but that "give" will be absorbing all the day to day impacts your Apple tablet experiences.

For the best protection, look for a folio made from quality materials, that's padded and offers some form of corner protection.

An Apple Pencil Holder and Other Options

Other things to consider are: How is the Apple tablet secured in the case; What options are available to me to expand the functionality; Does the cover hold the Apple Pencil and if so how; What is the cost and maybe most importantly, what is the value of the folio I am looking at. Let's look a bit at each.

Some cases use elastic bands to hold the iPad in place. Others use a form of glue while another option is to sew a tray into the cover that will securely hold your tablet. Which of these is best for you depends on your priorities. Do the elastic bands block the screen? How well will they hold the iPad as the elastic wears out over time? How much weight and bulk does the way the iPad is held in place add? All things to consider.

Most all the cases available make some provision to hold the Apple Pencil. Some are as simple (and careless) as an elastic loop sewn to an exterior seam. Others include an interior pocket or a separate, removable Pencil holder secured with strong magnets. If storage and protection for the Apple Pencil is important to you, make sure the case you choose has an intelligent provision to providing said storage and protection.

Some designs will have options for storing other things like papers or business cards. These tend to add bulk and can affect how the tablet sits on a surface. (Remember the wobbling!) Again, be aware of these things before purchasing.

Apple's iPads are the most expensive tablet computers made. Just because the market is flooded with cheap, poorly made, poorly engineered case options doesn't mean you have to buy one. Luckily, there are still a few companies left making quality designs.

The value and cost of your cover should be directly related to the value that you place on the information contained on your iPad combined with the out of pocket financial investment you made with your purchase.

Understanding Your Needs

So which is best? The term "best"is highly subjective. What is the best folio for someone using their Apple tablet on a construction site all day is probably not going to be the best design for an attorney.

Each environment is very different and the demands placed upon the case will also vary. Applying some forethought about where and how you plan on using your Apple tablet will help determine which design will be best for you. The best iPad Pro keyboard case starts with you understanding your needs and what you want or need the case to do.

Additional FAQs -

Do I need a case for my IPad?

The choice to use a case or not with your iPad will depend on 3 things: How often you will use it, the type of environment you'll use it in and how far you have to transport it to do so. Considering the cost of an Apple tablet, a good quality case is cheap insurance to keep it protected.
